Several leading critics have now published scores for Bordeaux 2016. You can find these the on Liv-ex Insights critic scores page.
Liv-ex has looked at the scores already released for the First Growths to see where the critics agree and disagree. Remarkably four of the five wines received a perfect 100-points from at least one critic.
So far, the critics’ choice for the vintage is Lafite Rothschild. The wine received the highest average of 98.2 and has the smallest range of scores. The lowest score it received was 95-98 from Antonio Galloni, who released his scores yesterday.
James Suckling was among the critics that awarded Lafite a perfect score. He described the wine as, “perhaps the greatest Lafite since the legendary 1959?”
Last year, Margaux was the only First Growth to receive a perfect 100-point score and was voted by Liv-ex members as the 2015 wine of the vintage. This year, however, the wine received the greatest variation in scores and is the only chateaux to miss out on a straight 100-point score from any of the critics. Jean-Marc Quarin scored the wine 99-100; Rebecca Gibb MW scored it just 92, calling it “Super delicate… Pure and fine with grainy tannin on the finish.”
James Suckling, on the other hand, called it “a larger and more expanded style of Margaux” (98-99).
