Today Liv-ex launches its new-look blog. This is designed to be fully responsive – so that you can browse easily on your mobile or tablet – and easy to search and navigate, enabling you to find analysis on any wines or trends in seven years of archives.
Some history…
The Liv-ex Blog launched on 20th March 2008, in the midst of the Global Financial Crisis. While stock markets floundered, fine wine had been enjoying a period of growth: between March 2007 and March 2008, the Liv-ex 100 gained 34%.
The years that followed saw several events that signalled periods of change for the fine wine market, leading to its peak in July 2011. It then fell until June 2014 and has since been almost completely flat. Throughout this period, 1,409 posts have been published on the blog covering market news and sharing data insights ranging from Lafite 1982 worth eight times its weight in silver to Broken China?.
Top posts of 2015
The top posts of 2015 include two of Liv-ex’s regular data projects: The Liv-ex 2015 Bordeaux Classification and the 2015 Power 100. Updates from Bordeaux grower, winemaker and writer Gavin Quinney (@GavinQuinney) were also a highlight, with his September harvest update attracting most attention.
A look at price gaps between identically scored Bordeaux 2009 and 2010 wines was also amongst the top posts, as were Liv-ex’s interviews with Neal Martin and Lisa Perotti-Brown.
Interviews and opinion
As well as keeping you up-to-date on fine wine market trends and movements, the blog has also featured interviews with a number of key critics.
Back in March 2012, Robert Parker told Liv-ex about overcoming his initial reservations about Bordeaux 2005. Earlier this year, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW talked about the future of the Wine Advocate, and in July Neal Martin discussed his new responsibilities as En Primeur reviewer for the publication. In the past, we have also interviewed Jancis Robinson, James Suckling and Antonio Galloni, amongst others.
Liv-ex MD James Miles (@hjpmiles) has also had the opportunity to share his views and expertise via interviews with Bloomberg and Wine Cellar Insider, and his presentation on fine wine speculation.
Looking ahead
In the coming months, both Burgundy and Bordeaux En Primeur will take place. Reports for the Bordeaux 2015 vintage have been positive; interest will next turn to critic reviews of the wines in barrel – and release prices. As with last year, coverage on the Liv-ex Blog will be extensive, with both Chateaux and merchant prices analysed and compared to stock already in the market.
After four consecutive years of decline the Liv-ex 100 ran flat in 2015. The year ahead will reveal if this points to a longer term directional shift.
