Cheval Blanc 2016 has been released at €552 per bottle ex-negociant. This represents a small increase – just 2.2% – on the release price of the 2015 (€540), though it should be noted that the 2015’s release price was 50% higher than 2014’s (€360). It is being offered by the international trade at £6,400 per 12×75.
Critics have mostly scored the wine in the high 90s, and Liv-ex members rated it as their seventh favourite wine of the vintage in our annual survey. Jane Anson noted its “softly-spun silky texture with complete focus and clarity through the palate”, calling it “gorgeous” (98 points). Neal Martin appears to be in agreement, also scoring it 97-99. He noted that it is “bashful at first but opens with confidence with aeration”.
The release price is also confident. At £6,400, the wine is higher than the majority of other recent back vintages including the 100-point (RP) 2005. (Though Neal Martin last awarded this wine 98+.)
As the chart below shows, prices and scores for Cheval Blanc are closely correlated. The release price of the 2016 places it above the trend line based on the mid-point of the barrel range. The 2005 stands out as a wine offering relative value, based on Robert Parker’s score.
Petit Cheval 2016 has been released at €120 per bottle ex-negociant. It is expected to be released by the trade at £1,450 per 12×75.
