Talbot 2016 has been released at €42 per bottle ex-negociant, up 9.4% on the 2015 release price of €38.40. It is being offered by the trade at £492 per 12×75. In sterling terms, this is an increase of 23% on last year’s open price of £400.
The price of today’s release was slightly higher than expected by the trade. Results of the Liv-ex 2016 En Primeur survey suggested that, on average, members expected the wine to be released at €41.38, up 7.77% on the 2015.
Overall, critics have been positive in their reviews of Talbot 2016. Antoni Galloni scored the wine 92-95 points and said that it “is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine”. Neal Martin agreed that the wine was “one to watch” and awarded it 90-92 points.
Buyers looking for relative value might consider Talbot 2010. The wine has a higher score of 94 points, several years in bottle and is available at just a 3.2% premium to the 2016.
As a matter of interest, Talbot follows the traditional pricing pattern of fine wine, where older vintages have appreciated in value as stock depletes. Prices for the wine are 84.8% correlated to its age and show little correlation to score, though those from ‘great’ vintages do appear to trade at a slight premium.
