Montrose 2016 was released today at €102 per bottle ex-negociant, equal to the 2015 release (€102). It is being offered by the international trade at £1,212 per 12×75, an increase of 6.3% on the 2015 in sterling terms. For dollar buyers, the release is around 6.0% cheaper than last year’s.
The price of today’s release was somewhat unexpected by the trade. Results of the Liv-ex 2016 En Primeur survey suggest that, on average, members expected the wine to be released at €113.65, up 11.42% on the 2015.
Overall, critics have been positive in their reviews of Montrose 2016. It received potential 100-point scores from Gavin Quinney (97-100), Jeff Leve (99-100) and Jean-Marc Quarin (100).
Neal Martin was also impressed, calling it “an animated, vivacious Montrose that starts in almost understated fashion yet builds in the mouth towards what is almost a sensual finish”. He added that “it is a disarmingly and hauntingly beautiful 2016” and awarded it 97-99 points.
Prices for Montrose are 86.9% correlated to Wine Advocate score. Based on today’s release of £1,212 per 12×75, Liv-ex’s ‘fair value’ methodology places Montrose 2016 below the trend line. It may therefore represent a compelling opportunity for buyers.
Buyers confident in the quality of the 2016 will find value in this year’s release.
The 2005 also looks attractive. It has a score of 97 points, over ten years in bottle and is available for just £17 less than the 2016.
La Dame Montrose was also released today at €26.40 per bottle ex-negociant, also equal to the 2015 release (€26.40). It is being offered by the international trade at £312 per 12×75.
