Grand Puy Ducasse 2016 has been released at €28.8 per bottle ex-negociant, up 11.6% on the release price of the 2015 (€25.8). It is being offered by the trade at £348 per 12×75, a 26.5% increase on last year’s release in sterling terms.
Critic scores for the wine are mostly around the late 80s and early 90s. Neal Martin commented the 2015 and 2016 are “equally good” (though the latter is scored marginally higher). He added that this may represent “a change in direction for this Pauillac estate that frustratingly under-performed in the past”.
While both wines may be equal in some respects, their prices are not: the 2015 is available in the market at a 25% discount to this year’s release. The 90-point 2012 might be another one to consider.
Still, buyers confident in the quality of the 2016 vintage may find it reassuring to observe that the latest release is priced below other great years, such as 2005, 2009 and 2010.
