Yesterday, we looked at the ten Bordeaux 2005 wines that have climbed the most since anticipation of upgrades across the vintage began to boost prices. One wine that featured was Mission Haut Brion 2005.
In April 2006, Parker awarded this wine a barrel range of 95-97 points. One year later, he upgraded it to 96-100 points and prices soared: before the upgrade, it traded at £2,100 per 12×75. Twelve months on – just before the critic’s in-bottle scores were announced – it traded at £6,000: a 185% increase. After a three-digit score failed to materialise (Parker awarded it 97), prices dropped and an upgrade to 98+ in August 2012 did not provide a lift.
Interestingly, anticipation of Parker’s 2005 retrospective appears to have had a greater impact: prices have climbed around 20% since the end of November last year, and it last traded for £3,700 per 12×75. Are buyers hoping for another upgrade?
Suckling has awarded the “long and beautiful” wine 99 points, while Neal Martin gave it 98. As noted earlier, Parker commented in August 2012 that “If everything comes together in 10-15 years, this brilliant 2005 should merit a triple digit score.”
