With Robert Parker’s ten-year retrospective of Bordeaux 2005 due within the next week, all eyes have been on the vintage. Earlier this year, we observed the beginning of a ripple effect as buyers became interested in the vintage after a number of upgrades. On Monday we looked at Palmer 2005, which has seen a bounce since December. But which other Bordeaux 2005s have been on the move?
The table below shows the top price movers since the end of November – just before the ‘ripple effect’ began to make waves. The majority have bottle scores from Parker within their original barrel range – or higher – and several have been awarded high scores from other key critics. Lafleur – which tops the table – received 100 points from James Suckling who reported: “It’s hard to believe the classic structure in this. Impeccable balance”. Mission Haut Brion, Grand Puy Lacoste and Leoville Poyferre 2005 all have high scores from Neal Martin: 98, 97 and 95 respectively.
Parker has expressed positive sentiments about a number of the wines in the table below. He is frank about the potential of Mission Haut Brion 2005, suggesting in August 2012 that “if everything comes together in 10-15 years, this brilliant 2005 should merit a triple digit score.” He describes Lafleur 2005 as “tight and austere at present, but unquestionably enormously endowed”, and expects that Vieux Chateau Certan 2005 “should develop magnificently”.
