Your data questions answered

What is a fine wine index?

Fine wine indices measure the movements of a pool of actively traded investment wines and reflect sentiment toward different fine wine-producing regions. They are thus vital in understanding the fine wine market dynamic, and its historic and possible future performance. Find out more

Where can I find the Liv-ex Indices?

Liv-ex has created several indices to track the price of fine wine, including the industry benchmark Liv-ex 100. You can find them on the indices page, which is part of the news & insights section.

How are the indices calculated?

Our indices track the prices of the most traded fine wines on the world’s most active and liquid marketplace; The London International Vintners Exchange. The indices are calculated using the Liv-ex Mid Price; the mid-point between the highest bid and the lowest offer among the largest pool of wine merchants worldwide. Each price is then verified by a valuation committee to ensure that the number is robust after taking into account all data at our disposal, including merchant list prices and transaction prices.

Prices given are for 12x75cl trades, or 6x75cl converted to a 12x75cl price.

Why is transactional data most reliable?

Often fine wine price information is based simply on list prices. These are advertised prices. There is no firm commitment to buy or sell at an advertised price. The real value of the wine may be higher or lower than listed.

Liv-ex considers prices from real merchant activity. This includes actual trade prices, as well as firm commitments to buy or sell on the market at a given price. All prices are standardised by condition and tax status, allowing for like-for-like comparisons.

Why is independence important?

Liv-ex doesn’t trade on the global marketplace. Our data is uniquely independent, based upon the real-time activity of 600 of the world’s leading fine wine merchants. This is why the world’s largest wine funds and private client merchants use Liv-ex data to value client assets. Stretching back over 20 years, indices from the London International Vintners Exchange can be found on Bloomberg and Refinitiv screens.

Can I see the historic values of the indices and their component wines?

This download of components doesn’t include the actual mid-price value for each wine. Liv-ex members on the appropriate package tier can access historical indices values using the Liv-ex Analysis Tools. Historical mid-price values are available using our APIs to members on the appropriate package tier.

Can I integrate these indices into my own website?

Yes. We have a suite of APIs which provide the full list of Liv-ex Indices, their descriptions, current and historical values, the wines that make up each index (their components) and performance data which you can integrate into your own charting solution.  For more information, book a call with our automation team.
