The Liv-ex Market Price

The Market Price is the best listed price for a wine in the secondary market.

Our goal is to save you time and help you make informed decisions by consolidating data from across the wine industry into a single, industry-leading reference point —trusted by merchants worldwide for accurate wine pricing.

How the Market Price is calculated

We monitor list prices from a wide range of trusted wine businesses, Liv-ex members and beyond, from both publicly available sources and trade-only B2B sources, to build a singular view of how the wine is priced in the secondary market.

Our system continuously analyses and evaluates a pool of over 200 million data points to determine the most accurate Market Prices for more than 500,000 different wines and vintages.

Format sizes
The Market Price is typically standardised to 12x75cl (9 litres), unless otherwise stated. The pack and bottle sizes considered in the calculation are based on the formats most commonly observed for the particular wine and vintage.

Merchants valuing non-standard bottle sizes may adjust prices up or down based on their experience of current market conditions. They also have the option to apply a Bottle Size Premium—a format ratio developed by Liv-ex to provide a realistic view of price premiums across different bottle formats.

Confidence
To help assess the reliability of prices for less frequently listed wines, each Market Price is accompanied by a colour-coded
confidence indicator, based on the density, age and liquidity of the data points.

Independence
The Market Price only looks at listings in the secondary market, it is independent and is not impacted by transactions, live bids or offers on the Liv-ex exchange.

How wine businesses use the Market Price

The Market Price is a trusted guide for pricing wine in good condition. It is used by leading merchants around the world to  provide valuations for clients. Many also use it to help inform purchase decisions, and to decide on the correct prices for sales.

If you are a private collector, you need to account for merchant commission when selling wine back to the trade. You might expect to receive offers 10-15% or more below Market Price for your wine, depending on its condition. Premiums may be offered for older wines with exceptional provenance.
