A parcel of Château Palmer 2014 has been re-released at €250 ex-négociant per bottle, 56% above the original release price (€160 per bottle). It’s being offered internationally at £2,580 per 12×75, 33.0% above the current market price (£1,940), and 72.0% above the original release price of £1,500 per 12×75. Further pricing analysis below.
Critical response
Neal Martin most recently tasted the 2014 for Vinous in February this year, giving it 93-points and commenting that it ‘has an attractive bouquet with red berry fruit, cedar, undergrowth and veins of blue fruit […] Linear in style, this is a Palmer that doesn’t want to show off and remains within the limitations of the growing season. It should offer another 20 years of drinking pleasure’.
Last tasted for the Wine Advocate by Neal Martin in 2017, he gave it 94-points, calling it ‘a Margaux with exquisite delineation and precision, hints of blackberry, boysenberry and a touch of pencil box […] What a beautiful Margaux and I bet it will be deceptively long-lived’.
Meanwhile Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (Wine Independent) also tasted the 2014 in February this year, awarding it 94-points, and writing that it ‘features evocative scents of stewed plums, blackberry preserves, and garrigue with hints of leather, Indian spices, and underbrush’.
Pricing analysis
Since its initial En Primeur release at £1,500 per 12×75 in 2015, prices of Palmer 2014 have trended upwards. Still, the highest-ever traded price sits at £2,254. Using the current Euro to Pound exchange rate (0.83), today’s re-release is available to UK merchants at £2,503. Given that the 2014 is one of the lower-scoring vintages of Palmer, buyers are likely to turn to other vintages available on the market.

The 99-point 2019 vintage may present an interesting opportunity for buyers. It is available at a Market Price of £1,800 – a discount of 30.2% to today’s release. Its drinking window spans an additional 20 years beyond the 2014’s (2060 vs. 2040), making the 2019 a better longer-term investment opportunity than the 2014.
