Matthew Luczy (The Wine Advocate) awarded the 2022 Almaviva a score of 96 points. The critic praised the wine’s palate, describing it as ‘dense, luscious, and staining, with considerable concentration and opulence’. He recommended buyers hold the wine for some time in cellar, adding that ‘it will take a few years to integrate its formidable tannins further’.

James Suckling awarded the wine a score of 99 points, calling it ‘complex and sophisticated’.

Pricing analysis

According to the Liv-ex Fair Value methodology, Market Prices of Almaviva are more strongly correlated with age than with scores from major critics (86.4%). Since prices of this wine tend to appreciate with age, younger vintages may present interesting investment opportunities. This is not the case with today’s release. As shown below, the 2022 vintage falls well above the Fair Value regression line.

Scores for Almaviva have improved significantly over the past 10 years. While the 2012 benefits from time in bottle, the wine received 93 points from The Wine Advocate. The 2018, 2020 and 2021 vintages all received 96 points from the publication, and are amongst the cheapest vintages available on the market.
