Château Figeac 2023 released En Primeur

  • Château Figeac 2023 has been released for £1,788 per 12×75.
  • ‘Ranks among the best wines of the vintage’, said Neal Martin, who awarded a score of 96-98 points.
  • Buyers looking for value might want to consider 2016 and 2019 vintages.

As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château Figeac 2023 has been released at €150 per bottle ex-négociant, down 40.5% on the 2022 release (€252).

It is being offered by the international trade for £1,788 per 12×75, a 41.1% decrease on the 2022’s opening price (£3,036 a case).

The 2020, 2019, 2016 and 2014 vintages may look good value in relation to today’s release. See more pricing analysis below.

Château Figeac was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the 2022 revision of the Saint-Émilion Classification.

Critical response

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) was effusive in his praise for the ‘gorgeous’ 2023 Figeac. According to him, it is ‘an absolute beauty’ and ‘shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage’. He awarded a score of 95-98 points.

Neal Martin (Vinous) was similarly complimentary, awarding 96-98 points and adding that it ‘will be a wonderful Saint-Emilion that ranks amongst the best wines of the vintage’.

Jane Anson awarded the wine her second highest score of the vintage, 98 points. She describes a wine with ‘savoury dark fruit character, with flint and textural interest, full of Figeac finesse’.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) gave a score range of 96-98 points, noting ‘out-going scents of black raspberries and fresh blackcurrants, opening out to reveal an undercurrent of pencil shavings, rose bud tea, iron ore, and wood smoke’.

William Kelley (The Wine Advocate) also awarded 96-98 points, calling the 2023 a ‘brilliant classic in the making’.

According to James Lawther MW (Jancis Robinson), the 2023 is a ‘typical Figeac with sweetness and freshness combined’. He gave a score of 17.5/20 points

Pricing analysis

According to the Liv-ex Fair Value methodology, Market Prices of Château Figeac are 65.9% correlated with scores from Neal Martin, Liv-ex members’ most trusted critic of Bordeaux En Primeur wine. As shown on the chart below, today’s release falls below the Fair Value regression line.

While the wine received an impressive critical response, it remains more expensive than other highly rated physical vintages available on the market.

The 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020 vintages all fall below the trend line and represent Fair Value.

Of these, the 98-point 2016 and 2019 vintages may be the more compelling alternatives. Both are available at a slight premium to today’s release, with a Market Price of £1,804 and £1,796 per 12×75 respectively.

In addition to Martin’s 98-point score, the 2016 received 98 points from Jane Anson and 98+ from Jeb Dunnuck and Antonio Galloni.

Fans of Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW may instead opt for the 2019, the only vintage to have received a perfect 100-point score from the critic.
