Critical response

‘It will be worth a special effort to seek out’, said William Kelley (The Wine Advocate), who awarded the wine a potentially perfect score of 97-100 points.

Jane Anson awarded the wine a score of 98 points, describing notes of ‘gorgeously dark and vibrant fruit, with gun smoke and campfire, concentrated cassis and blackberry pastille, grilled almond, saffron and pomegranate’.

Neal Martin (Vinous), awarding the wine a score range of 96-98, called the wine ‘magnificent’. According to him, it ‘gains depth on the finish but maintains a sense of linearity that ensures it is one of the vintage’s finest contributions from the Left Bank’.

‘The 2023 is magnificent in every way’, said Antonio Galloni (Vinous), awarding 95-97. He adds that readers ‘will have to be patient, as this is a wine built for the cellar’.

James Lawther MW (Jancis Robinson) called the 2023 ‘very accomplished’ and gave it a score of 18/20 points, his joint-highest of the vintage.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) described ‘intense scents of crushed blackcurrants, fresh blackberries, and raspberries along with nuances of licorice, crushed rocks, and mossy tree bark plus a hint of iron ore’. She awarded 97-99 points.

Pricing analysis

As shown in the chart below, today’s release falls above the Fair Value regression line. There are more options available for those interested in back-vintage opportunities.

The 2014, 2017, 2021, 2019 and 2020 vintages all fall below the Fair Value trend line and represent fair value.

The 98-point 2019 vintage may be of interest to buyers. While available at a slight premium to today’s release, the wine hails from a proven vintage and also boasts 100 points from both Antonio Galloni and Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW.

The 2020 is also available at a slight premium to today’s release but may be compelling for fans of Neal Martin – the wine received 99 points from the critic, his highest rating of the past decade.

While slightly lower rated, the 2014 and 2017 vintages may also be of interest. Martin scored them both 95 points and they are available at 33.5% and 41.5% discount to today’s release respectively.
