Critical response
According to William Kelley (The Wine Advocate), ‘the 2023 Beau-Séjour Bécot has turned out beautifully and looks likely to rival or surpass the brilliant 2022’. He awarded a barrel score of 96-98 points.
Jane Anson awarded the wine a score of 95 points, describing notes of ‘blueberry and damson fruit, with bitter cocoa bean and coffee, saffran and smoked dried herbs’.
‘I see a wine with more aromatic presence, greater precision and more refined tannins than any recent vintage I can recall. In a word: magnificent’, said Antonio Galloni (Vinous), awarding a score of 95-98 points.
By contrast, Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded a score of 92-94 points. He called the wine ‘classy and complex’, adding that it should ‘age with style’.
James Lawther MW (Jancis Robinson) called the wine ‘a clear-cut expression of the limestone terroir’, awarding 16.5/20 points.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) scored the wine 95-97+ points. In her tasting note, she describes aromas of ‘crushed plums, black raspberries, and Morello cherries, opening out to a delicate undercurrent of garrigue, crushed rocks, violets, cranberry sauce, and pencil shavings’.
