As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Domaine de Chevalier Rouge 2023 has been released at €45.6 per bottle ex-négociant, down 17.4% on the 2022 release (€55.20).
It is being offered by the international trade for £549.60 per 12×75, a 19.2% decrease on the 2022’s opening price (£680 a case).
At this price, today’s release is one of the most expensive vintages available on the market. Buyers looking for value opportunities have options in back vintages. See more pricing analysis below.
Critical response
Yohan Castaing (The Wine Advocate) awarded the wine a barrel score of 94-96 points. According to him ‘the 2023 vintage marked a significant achievement, a return to seamless elegance and a less oak-dominated bouquet’.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) also awarded 94-96 points, praising ‘a gorgeous core of black cherries, redcurrants, and cassis, with underlying hints of violets and forest floor’.
According to Jane Anson, the 2023 vintage is ‘a great Chevalier, capturing the great classicism of the year’. She awarded a score of 95 points.
Neal Martin (Vinous) praised the wine’s ‘wonderful delineation and focus’, awarding a score of 94-96 points.
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) described the wine as ‘creamy and expansive with terrific balance’. He awarded it a score of 94-96 points.
‘Elegant in style but not quite at the top of its game’, said James Lawther MW (Jancis Robinson), who gave the wine 16.5/20 points.
Pricing analysis
According to the Liv-ex Fair Value methodology, Market Prices of Domaine de Chevalier Rouge are 52.8% correlated with scores from Neal Martin, Liv-ex members’ most influential critic of Bordeaux En Primeur wines. As shown in the chart below, today’s release falls above the Fair Value regression line. There are options in back vintages that may present reasonable value to buyers.
The 2014, 2017 and 2019 vintages all fall below the trend line and represent Fair Value.
Fans of Neal Martin may opt for the 97-point 2019 vintage, his highest scoring of the past decade. With a Market Price of £472, it is available at a 14.1% discount to today’s release.
Though receiving a lower score of 94 points from Martin, the 2014 vintage may also be of interest. It benefits from extra time in the bottle, and is available at a 27.2% discount to today’s release.
