Critical response

Though describing the wine as ‘very fine and delicious’, Neal Martin (Vinous) ‘would not place the 2023 in the canon of top vintages’. He awarded it a barrel range of 93-95 points.

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) gave a score of 92-95 points, describing the wine as ‘dense and powerful’. He added that ‘the firm tannins give a feeling of sternness – a sense of classical austerity that is beguiling’.

Yohan Castaing (The Wine Advocate) awarded a score of 94-96 points, describing aromas of ‘ripe red fruits, dark wild berries, spring flowers, burning embers and lilac’.

Pricing Analysis

Using Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology, Market Prices for Château La Mission Haut-Brion are 72.0% correlated to Neal Martin scores. As shown by the chart below, today’s release is coming to the market above the regression line.

The 98-point 2019 and 2020 each fall below the regression line, making them Fair Value. The 2019 in particular is available at the same price as today’s release (£2,220). With three years in-bottle and a nod from Neal Martin as ‘exceptional,’ the 2019 seems quite compelling.

At £1,450 per 12×75, the slightly lower-rated 2014 may offer reasonable value to buyers, it is available at a discount of 34.7% to today’s release.

The 2016 vintage, though last traded at a premium to today’s release (£2,680), may also be of interest to fans of Martin, who awarded the wine his highest score of the past decade – 99 points.
