Sassicaia 2021 was released in the UK on the 8th of February at £2,500 per case, up 4.2% on the 2020‘s release price.
Monica Larner (Wine Advocate) awarded the 2021 Sassicaia 100 points, calling it ‘a quintessential Sassicaia that represents the excellence of the vintage and also respects the unique taste profile of this distinguished Tuscan blend of Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc’. In 2023, Sassicaia claimed the title of the most searched-for Tuscan label (LWIN7) with over 3.3 million searches. It was also the most bid-for Tuscan label, ultimately becoming the most traded Italian label of the year in terms of both value and volume, outperforming Tignanello. Sassicaia producer Tenuta San Guido held 15.8% of Italian trade by value in 2023.
Sassicaia 2021 Fair Value analysis
Analysing previous release patterns shows that the 2019 vintage was released 11% higher than the 2018, which itself was introduced at a 6% premium to the 2017. Last year, the 2020 was released at a 21% premium compared to the 2019. While the 2018 and 2019 are trading 19.8% and 8.1% above their release price respectively, the 2020 is trading 13.3% below its release price, meaning the 21% year-on-year price increase did not land particularly well.
Sassicaia 2020 trades on Liv-ex
At £2,500 per case, the 2021 looks attractive considering its high score from The Wine Advocate. According to Liv-ex’s Fair Value methodology, Sassicaia Market Prices are 63.4% correlated to Wine Advocate scores; the 2021 falls well below the Fair Value line, making it an appealing option for buyers.
Other vintages that look attractive based on their Wine Advocate scores include the 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 which all fall below the Fair Value line.
The 2016 vintage, which was also awarded 100 points from The Wine Advocate, has a current Market Price of £3,750 per 12×75. While the 2016 has age on its side, the 2021 has come in at a much lower price than that, making it a compelling option for buyers.
