Penfolds Grange 2019 released

  • Penfolds Grange 2019 has been released internationally at £4,680 per case.
  • The wine has a score of 95+ points from The Wine Advocate.
  • Those looking for opportunities have several options among back vintages, including the 100-point 2013.

Penfolds Grange 2019 has been released at £4,680 per 12×75, up 7.8% on the 2018’s opening price (£4,340 per case).

The new release comes at a premium to others on the market. For those searching for value, the 2010, 2012 and 2013 offer higher quality at a lower cost. See more pricing analysis below.

Critical response

Erin Larkin of The Wine Advocate awarded the wine a score of 95+ points, highlighting the wine’s ‘dark and broody’ profile with the caveat that buyers should avoid opening the wine for at least 20 years. According to Larkin, the near-total Shiraz blend is a ‘constellation of flavor and texture’ that is ‘almost impossible’ to wrap the mind around.

Angus Hughson (Vinous) awarded the wine a score of 96 points. He calls the 2019 ‘bold’ and ‘expansive,’ with a ‘dense core of coca, blackberry and baked terracotta’. Echoing others, he warns: ‘don’t even think of opening for at least a decade’.

Jancis Robinson MW awarded the wine a 19/20, calling it ‘so concentrated it’s almost bursting at the seams of its attempt at a corset’. Alongside the score, she deems it ‘impressive and exciting’.

Fair Value analysis

This year’s release comes at a premium to some of its back vintages, with a Market Price higher than every vintage in the past decade except for 2011. As mentioned above, the 2019 Penfolds Grange comes at a premium of 7.8% to last year’s Autumn La Place release.

Those looking for value among back vintages might consider the 2013, which boasts a perfect 100 points from The Wine Advocate. Writing for WA, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW praised the 2013’s ‘wonderful grace and depth’ alongside its remarkable longevity. In her opinion, ‘it should easily cellar for 40+ years’. Available at a Market Price of £3,980 per case, it is currently available at a discount of 15.0% to today’s release. And with only ten years on the market, the 2013 might be an interesting opportunity for buyers searching for a long-term investment.

Similarly, the 2010 and 2012 vintages might be of interest, scoring 99 points each from The Wine Advocate and available at a discount of 15.4% and 18.4% to today’s release respectively.
