Critical response
The Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski awarded the wine a score of 93 points, and noted that ‘according to winemaking consultant Chris Phelps, nothing picked after September 27 (the day the Glass Fire ignited) went into the final blend’. However, he added that the ‘full-bodied effort is concentrated and long, but it does exhibit a slightly coarse texture’.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) scored today’s release 96 points. She proclaimed that the wine is an ‘impressive showing for this challenging vintage!’.
Jane Anson awarded the wine a higher score of 97 points, noting that ‘as ever it is hard to resist’.
Fair value
Today’s release comes at a premium to others on the market. Those looking for value should consider the 2014 and 2016 vintages, which were rated 95 points by The Wine Advocate. Both back vintages are currently priced at £1,184 per case, a 26.9% discount on today’s release.
The 2015 and 2017, with scores of 94 points, also look good value at present.
On the other hand, while the 2019 has declined in value since its release, it is currently available at a 14.2% discount to today’s release. It also has the best score among the last 12 vintages from The Wine Advocate.
