Marchesi Antinori’s Solaia 2020 has been released through La Place de Bordeaux at €230 per bottle ex-négociant, up 9.5% on the 2019’s opening price (€210 per bottle). The wine is being offered internationally for £3,240 per 12×75.
At this price, the new release comes at a premium to others on the market. The 2019, 2018 and 2013 vintages appear to offer better value. See more pricing analysis below.
Critical response
The Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner gave the wine a score of 96 points. She noted that ‘the 2020 vintage is quite bold, and it plays its best cards in terms of texture and mouthfeel’, adding that the wine is ‘a bigger, more accessible wine compared to the last two vintages on the market’.
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) awarded the wine a score of 97 points. He said he ‘expected a more exuberant wine, but the 2020 is built along more classic lines’. He further notes that ‘the 2020 is a terrific example of the recent stylistic shift at Antinori. In the past, richness and opulence were qualities of a vintage that would have been amplified in the vineyard and cellar. Today, the aim is to capture a more balanced expression of these kinds of vintages, and that very much comes through’.
Jane Anson scored the wine 98 points, calling it ‘a great vintage of the iconic Solaia, full of cloves, sage, graphite, grilled dried herbs, underbrush and roasted cherry pit’.
Fair Value analysis
According to Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology, Solaia has a strong correlation with Wine Advocate scores. As shown in the chart below, any release price in excess of £2,600 per case pushes the 2020 over the fair value line. At £3,240 per 12×75, the new release sits firmly above it.
In contrast, the 2013, 2018, and 2019 vintages, all with 97-point scores, fall comfortably below the Fair Value line, presenting a compelling option for buyers looking for value.
Similarly, the 2012, 2014, and 2017 vintages, each awarded 95 points, also find themselves positioned beneath the Fair Value line, making them attractive options.
The 2015 vintage, with 100 points from The Wine Advocate and a Market Price of £3,384 (12×75), also sits just below the Fair Value line, presenting a great opportunity for buyers looking for value.
