In the first half of 2023, there has been heightened interest in multiple regions across the globe, a contrast from last year when Bordeaux and Burgundy dominated the list of most searched-for wines. At the brand level (LWIN7), Château Lafite Rothschild, Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri Sassicaia, and Château Mouton Rothschild have taken the top spots as the most searched-for wines by Liv-ex’s 620+ members.
Interestingly, the oldest vintage of the most searched-for wines is 2008. Upon dissecting these search rates based on regions – the US, UK, Asia, and Europe – distinct patterns of interest and evolving demand came to light. More below.
What are the most searched-for wines in the USA and Asia?
In the USA, the focal point is incredibly straightforward. All of the top 10 most searched-for wines by US merchants are different vintages of Promontory, Napa Valley. The 2018 vintage, which has a Market Price of £9,410 per 12×75, topped the rankings. This marks a clear shift from last year, as US searches last year were for different vintages of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru.
Search interest in Asia, however, has continued to centre around First Growths. Last year, Château Lafite Rothschild took nine out of the top ten spots, whilst this year, it has taken all ten.
The top spot is taken by the 2022 vintage, which was released En Primeur in June at £7,150 per case. The wine received a score of 96-98 points from Neal Martin (Vinous) and has a current Market Price of £6,715.
What are the most searched-for wines in Europe and the UK?
In contrast to the focused trends observed in the USA and Asia, the European and UK markets exhibited a more diverse array of top searched-for wines in the first half of 2023.
In Europe, the previous year saw substantial interest in Champagne in the same time period, whereas this year, Bordeaux has taken the spotlight. Château Lafite Rothschild’s 2020, 2022, and 2019 vintages, along with Château Mouton Rothschild’s 2020 and 2019 vintages, have secured five of Europe’s top spots.
Despite this shift, Champagne maintains a strong presence in the top ten, with the 2008 and 2014 releases of Louis Roederer, Cristal, and Dom Pérignon 2013 represented.
Interestingly, the leading position for Europe is now claimed by the Tuscan wine Sassicaia, Tenuta san Guido, Bolgheri 2020. The 2019 vintage also features in the list.
The UK search trends are similar, with an emphasis on Bordeaux First Growths, Super Tuscans, and Champagne. While last year featured four Burgundy wines within the top ten, this year’s list comprises none.
Vietto, Barolo Lazzarito 2019 from Piedmont has secured a place on the list, and the remaining spots are dominated by Château Lafite Rothschild, Tenuta san Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia, and Dom Pérignon.
Interestingly, the top ten list for the UK does not contain any of the 2022 En Primeur releases – the focus gravitates towards back vintages of Lafite.
