As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château Haut-Bailly 2022 has been released at €120 per bottle ex-négociant, up 25% on the 2021 release (€96 per bottle).

It is being offered by the international trade for £1,440 per 12×75, a 25% increase on the 2021’s opening price (£1,152 a case).

The new release is one of the most expensive vintages on the market. Buyers looking for options among back vintages might consider the 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020. See more pricing analysis below.

Critics’ scores

Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine a barrel range of 96-98 points, highlighting its ‘haunting beauty’. He applauds the bouquet that ‘compels you to just sit and contemplate’ – in his words: ‘the kind of wine that will bring people to tears’.

Jeff Leve (Wine Cellar Insider) gave it a range of 98-100 points, declaring it was in ‘serious contention as the best vintage ever produced at Haut-Bailly.’

James Suckling rated it at 97-98, highlighting the ‘incredible complexity of aromas’ and ‘polished and pure’ tannins.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Wine Independent) was slightly more reserved in her review, scoring it 96-98 points and recommending a ‘fair bit of swirling’ to fully bring out the nose.

Looking at the chart below, today’s release is coming to the market quite above the regression line.

Buyers looking for other opportunities might want to consider the 2019 vintage. It holds a score of 97 points from Neal Martin (Vinous), and it is available at a 40.3% discount to today’s release.

The 96-point 2020 might also be of interest. Despite sitting slightly above the Fair Value line, it is available at a discount of 25.3% to the 2022.

The 95-point 2016 and 2018 vintages also fall below the line and are available at discounts of 38.2% and 37.5% to today’s release.
