As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Pagodes de Cos 2022 has been released at €38.40 per bottle ex-négociant, up 23.1% on the 2021 release (€31.20 per bottle).
It is being offered by the international trade for £460 per 12×75, a 23.7% increase on the 2021’s opening price (£372 a case).
The new release is one of the most expensive on the market. As such, buyers looking for value may want to consider the 2016, 2017 and 2019 vintages. See more pricing analysis below.
Critics’ scores
Neal Martin (Vinous) gave the 2022 Pagodes de Cos a barrel range of 91-93 points.
James Suckling awarded the wine a barrel range of 94-95 points. In his tasting note he said ‘this is impressive, big and very structured at the beginning, but then it opens and spreads out with ultra-fine tannins that caress the palate’.
Jean-Marc Quarin scored it 95 points and said that ‘the creamy fatness, meaty opulence, caress and fullness of this wine are enormous’.
William Kelley (Wine Advocate) scored it 89-91 points, commenting that it was ‘a medium to full-bodied, rich and muscular wine that’s fleshy and extracted while remaining somewhat fresh and vibrant’.
Fair Value analysis
There is no significant correlation between Pagodes de Cos Market Prices and Neal Martin scores – the chosen critic for Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology.
For score-conscious buyers, the 2016 vintage might look like an exciting option. With 92 points from Neal Martin (similar to the 2022), it is available at a 25% discount to today’s release.
The 91-point 2017 and 2019 vintages are also attractive – they are available at discounts of 33.3% and 22.2% to today’s release respectively.
