Recent trading activity
Burgundy has been active this week with 36.9% of trade by value. This is part in thanks to some high-value trades of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti La Tache, Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny, Coche-Dury Meursault and Domaine Leroy.
Meanwhile, Champagne and Bordeaux have continued to trade well. Louis Roderer Cristal Rosé 2013 was among the top traded wines, along with Chateau Figeac 2017.
Figeac’s 2013 vintage also traded at an all-time high on Wednesday of £1,490 per 12×75 (packed as 6×75).
Ornellaia 2020 pricing analysis

Release information
Ornellaia 2020 has already been released via La Place de Bordeaux at €117 per bottle ex-negociant, up 8.3% on the 2019 release (€108).
The UK release price is yet to be announced. However, it has been released in Asia with an RRP of 1,550 HKD, 35,000 JPY and 300 SGD per bottle (between £1,921-£2,599 per 12×75).
At the time of writing it is offered LIVE for £1,910 per 12×75 (packed as 6×75).
Critical reviews
Monica Larner (Wine Advocate) awarded the 2020 a barrel range of 95-97 points. In her tasting note, she said that the wine would be ‘presented in the fall but won’t hit the market until spring of the following year’.
Larner added that ‘this broad and generous expression has a beautiful quality of fruit and oak that speaks to the very best of Italian winemaking’.
Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux) scored the wine 96 points. She noted that it was ‘a little more open and generous than the 2019 was at the same stage’ and that it was ‘luscious and enticing in texture’.
Fair Value opportunities
As the chart below shows, Ornellaia prices are 51% correlated to Wine Advocate scores.
If the wine were to be released at £1,710 (the same price as the 2019 release), it would fall just below the ‘Fair Value’ line.
Buyers looking for other options have many to choose from. Should the wine fall at the lower end of Larner’s barrel range, then the 96-point 2017 vintage might offer better value.
Should it fall at the top end, buyers may want to consider the 2019 vintage, which was awarded 97 points by the critic and is available at a small discount. In her tasting note, Monica Larner said the wine was ‘a beautiful expression of coastal Tuscany’.
The 2019 also boasts a perfect 100 points from Lisa Perotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent). In her review, she said that ‘this 2019 Ornellaia is a beautiful, luxurious, and vivacious wine’.
Other vintages below the ‘Fair Value’ line include the 2011, 2014 and 2016.
