Recent trading activity
Tuscany was in focus at the end of last week, accounting for 13.3% of trade on Thursday and Friday (at the time of writing). Activity was centred on Antinori’s Tignanello, whose 2020 vintage was released earlier in the week.
Following the announcement, the 2007 vintage traded at an all-time high of £2,054 per 12×75. Several large format bottles of also traded at a premium to their Market Prices: the 2003, 2010, 2013, 2015 and 2016.
Meanwhile, more Bordeaux wines continued to trade at record-prices, including Chateau Haut-Bailly 2010 (£1,252 per 12×75) and Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2007 (£4,850 per 12×75).
Latour 2015 pricing analysis
Ahead of Latour’s 2015 release in the UK market, we review its price in the context of other vintages currently available.
As the chart above shows, Latour prices are 93% correlated to Wine Advocate scores. If the 2015 were to be released at £7,000 per 12×75, it would fall just below the ‘Fair Value’ line.
However, when looking at Neal Martin’s scores*, the picture looks quite different, as shown by the chart below.
The correlation remains the same at 93%, which is perhaps unsurprising given that Liv-ex members voted Neal Martin as the most influential Bordeaux En Primeur critic in 2022.
As such, the relative value of the upcoming release might vary considerably depending on your critic of choice. For followers of Neal Martin, a £7,000 release price might not be quite as attractive as it would be for Wine Advocate supporters. Indeed, the price would need to be nearer £5,000.
This might be more likely given the release prices of some recent vintages with similar scores. For example, the 2012 and 2014 were released at £4,200 and £4,950 per 12×75 respectively.
As always, ultimately the market will decide the success of the 2015 release. That being said, for buyers eyeing up other opportunities, there are many options.
The 2012 in particular sits below the line in both the Neal Martin and Wine Advocate charts and might make an exciting alternative.
