Recent trading activity
Mid-week trading focused on Bordeaux, accounting for 50% of trade by value. Several wines traded at all-time highs, including Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2010 (£2,178 per 12×75) and Chateau Pichon Baron 2008 (£1,334 per 12×75).
Chateau La Gaffeliere 2017 and Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2013, also hit highs of £576 and £1,050 per 12×75 respectively.
Bollinger R.D 2008 pricing analysis
According to the Drinks Business, Bollinger RD 2008 will be released into the UK market on the 14th March with a recommended global retail price of £350 per bottle. According to UK merchants the in-bond private client price will be around £2,400 per 12×75 (shown in the chart above).
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) scored the wine 96 points and described it as ‘powerful, vinous Champagne’ that is ‘quite exotic’ at times.
According to The Wine Advocate Vintage Guide, Champagne’s 2008 vintage is considered ‘extraordinary’ and was awarded 99 points. The only other recent vintage that comes close is 2012 with 96 points.
In fact, no other Champagne vintage has received 99 points from the publication since 1970 (when records began). The second-highest scoring vintage is 1996, which was awarded 97 points.
Fair Value?
As the ‘Fair Value’ chart above shows, Bollinger RD prices are 93% correlated to age. Several vintages are available at a discount to the upcoming release, including 2007, 2004 and 2002.
For those willing to pay a premium for an exceptional vintage, today’s release might look attractive. However, there are other 2008 Champagnes on the market are available for less.
For example, at £1,700 per 12×75, Bollinger’s Grand Annee 2008 is 29% less than the estate’s R.D.
Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque 2008, Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2008 and Dom Perignon 2008 are also available at small discounts.
