As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château Cos d’Estournel 2021 has been released at €144 per bottle ex-négociant, down 4 % on the 2020’s opening price.
It is being offered by the international trade for £1,716 per 12×75. There are back vintages which look better value in relation to today’s release. See more pricing analysis below.
Critics’ scores
Reaction from critics was a little mixed, with some suggesting it was a wine yet to come out of its shell, while others saw more immediate potential.
‘This is old school in some ways and grumpy in its youth,’ wrote Neal Martin (Vinous) who rated it 93-95 points.
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) and William Kelley (Wine Advocate) both thought the young 2021 ‘promising’. Galloni rated it 94-96 and Kelley 94-95.
Jane Anson meanwhile was positive about the wine, rating it 96-points. ‘Easily one of the wines of the vintage,’ she wrote.
Fair Value analysis
The 2018 and 2019 vintages would appear to offer better value than the 2021. With better scores from Martin (96-points and 97-points respectively) as well as being cheaper at under £1,500 per case (12×75).
Going further back, there is also value in the 95-point 2017, 96-point 2014, 94-point 2015 which are all cheaper. The 2017 is currently available for £1,000 per dozen.
Other releases
Second label, Pagodes de Cos, was released at €31.20 per bottle, the same as the 2020’s opening price. It is being offered for £372 per case (12×75).
