- Château Beychevelle is the fourth most purchased Bordeaux label in Asia.
- The 2019 vintage leads trade and price performance.
- The upcoming 2021 release should be priced around £700 per case to offer fair value.
Ahead of the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the 3rd of June this year, Château Beychevelle has been subject to increased demand on the secondary market.
Beychevelle has built a strong following in China partly due to its label, which resonates with the theme of the annual festival. The label depicts a longboat with a bow modelled in the shape of a griffon, which was the guardian of Dionysus’ wine goblet according to Greek mythology.
Year-to-date, Beychevelle has been the fourth most-bought Bordeaux wine in Asia. Its 2019 vintage has been the most traded by both value and volume, followed by the 2018.

Price performance has mirrored demand. The 2019 has risen the most in the past year, up 33.1%. The 2018 is next, with a 22.6% increase (see chart above).
Beychevelle has outperformed the broader Bordeaux market over one year. The wine’s index has risen 15.8% versus 10.9% for the Bordeaux 500 index and 9.5% for the Left Bank 200 index.
Assessing the upcoming 2021 release
The château will be releasing its 2021 vintage in this year’s En Primeur campaign, but what would be the right price?
The wine has 91-93 points from Neal Martin (Vinous) who noted that it ‘does not possess the dimension of the previous vintage’ but is still ‘quite an endearing Beychevelle’.
However, prices for Beychevelle have stronger correlation to age than critic scores. As the chart below shows, a price in line with the 2020’s Market Price (£720 per 12×75) would represent good value.
If priced below £700 per case, the 2021 would be the best value Beychevelle vintage in the market today.
