Between 2018 and 2021, the number of Italian wines traded (LWIN11) on Liv-ex more than tripled. Three months into 2022, the number is halfway through the record level achieved last year.
Much of this broadening has come from regions not typically associated with Italy’s secondary market, which has long revolved around Tuscany and Piedmont. Of the 2,014 wines that traded last year, 200 came from outside these strongholds. Veneto and Abruzzo have been the leading regions, accounting for 49.7% and 34.2% of the remaining trade share respectively.
The top traded Italian wines outside of Tuscany and Piedmont can be seen in the table below. Valentini Trebianno d’Abruzzo 2017, which tops the list, last traded at £896 per 12×75, a 6.2% premium on its current Market Price.
While wines from Veneto and Abruzzo have made up the top ten, there is a developing market for Puglia, Campania, Calabria, Trentino Alto Adige, Vigneti delle Dolomiti and more. Buyers searching for diversity of styles and value have plenty to choose from.
Moreover, there are currently over 4,429 LIVE Italian opportunities on your exchange.
