The Sauternes 50 outperforms Bordeaux 500 over one year

Of the indices that make up the Bordeaux 500, the Sauternes 50 remains the perennial underperformer.

However, in a surprise twist, its performance over the past year (February 2021-February 2022) has been second only to the Fine Wine 50.

In the past one year, the index has risen 13.8%, just behind the Fine Wine 50 (14.7%) and above the Bordeaux 500 which rose 11.6%.

The index has also enjoyed a series of positive monthly gains since November last year.

The success of the index is very much down to Château d’Yquem. As can be seen in the chart above, the Sauternes estate enjoyed a positive end to 2021, and it is its performance which has chiefly buoyed up the whole Sauternes 50 over the past year.

We recently looked at the top-scoring vintages of Yquem, which is due to release its 2019 vintage next week.

Although Yquem has shown the strongest price appreciation over the last five years (up 24.3%), it has not been entirely alone.

Château Suduiraut has risen 23.2% and Château Coutet, 15.8%. Suduiraut’s 2011 vintage and the 2014 from Coutet have been the estates’ best-performing wines over the past year.
