Antonio Galloni (Vinous) has released his annual report on Barbaresco, which focuses on the 2018 and 2019 vintages; as well as some other recent releases.

Overall, Galloni found 2018 to be much better in Barbaresco than Barolo. However, he noted that both regions faced similar challenges like hail damage and constant rain in spring and summer.

As a result, he revealed that there will be ‘no Riservas from the Produttori del Barbaresco in 2018’ and no single-vineyard Barbarescos from Gaja. Although not outstanding across the board, Galloni said he found 2018 ‘an average to average-plus vintage’.

Galloni only tasted a small selection of the 2019s but found the wines to be ‘deep and layered’. He was ‘extremely optimistic’ about the vintage, which he said had the ‘potential to be superb’.

His favourite wines from the report can be seen in the table below.

Year-to-date, Barbaresco has taken 19.9% of all Piedmont trade. The 2018 has been its second-most traded vintage by value. Gaja Barbaresco has been the most active wine from the vintage, having last traded at £1,590 per 12×75, 5.9% below its release price.

Other wines that have seen demand include Ceretto’s Bernardot and Asili, La Spinetta Gallina and Ca’ Nova Montefico Bric Mentina.
