Top-performing vintages of Calon-Ségur

*made using the Liv-ex Charting Tool

With its label’s distinctive heart motif, Château Calon-Ségur is an obvious candidate for some insight ahead of Valentine’s Day.

The third growth may be the junior partner in Saint-Estèphe, alongside second growths Château Cos d’Estournel and Château Montrose, but its recent market performance points to a brand on the rise.

For example, Calon-Ségur was ranked alongside Cos and Montrose in Tier 2 of last year’s Liv-ex Classification. It dropped some places in the Power 100 (down to 97th), but its average price performance over October 2020-September 2021 was 12.3%; stronger than Cos (7.6%) and Montrose (6.1%).

Some of the top-performing vintages from Calon-Ségur over the last five years can be seen in the chart above. ‘On’ vintages in particular have been out-performing the Bordeaux 500 in this period – including the 2010 (48.9%) and 2005 (62.2%).

The 2016, meanwhile, has risen 19.1% over the last two years. Its score of 96 from Neal Martin is its best rating from the critic which has likely had an impact on its recent performance.

The 2019 vintage, which has a current rating of 95-97 from Martin, has also risen in value recently, climbing 36.7% over the past year (to £1,080 per case). It has not moved since, however, with the market perhaps waiting for Martin’s in-bottle verdict.

There are currently LIVE bids and offers for six-packs of both vintages under Market Price. Six bottles of the 2016 last traded at the start of February for £540 – 10% less than the Market Price (£600).
