The brands to watch outside of the Power 100

  • Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair rose 180 places this year but still missed out on the top 100
  • Marques de Murrieta and Henri Bonneau were two more brands that made big gains.

The Liv-ex Power 100 ranks the most powerful fine wine brands in the secondary market using five criteria, including price performance and total value and volume traded. This year a record 421 brands qualified, up from 325 in the 2020 list.
Each year some brands make big leaps in the rankings. For example, one brand that made a big jump in 2021 was Emmanuel Rouget, which rose 205 places from 249th to 44th place.
However, many of the brands that qualified saw big improvements in their rankings but still failed to make the top 100.
Today’s analysis looks at the biggest risers outside of the top 100, which might be ones to watch in 2022.

Biggest risers outside the top 100

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair was the highest riser that failed to make the final list. The brand rose 180 spots from 300th to 120th this year.
Its best category was average trade price where it was ranked fifth (at £26,442 per 12×75). It also had strong price performance, with prices up 22% on average.
However, it was let down by the number of wines traded and its trade by volume, both of which were low.

Other brands on the rise

As the table above shows, the origins of brands on the rise was varied. Spanish producer Marqués de Murrieta rose 151 places to 159th as a result of rising trade volume.
Rhône producer Henri Bonneau also went up from 305th to 173rd – a rise of 132 places – with its average trade price (£2,316 per 12×75) being its strongest feature.
Perrot-Minot and Bruno Clair’s performance ties into the ongoing trend of buyers looking for Burgundian labels at more accessible prices. While the strong performances from Delamotte and Hundred Acre point to the ongoing broadening of the market.
It remains to be seen if these brands can sustain this momentum into next year and have a shot at, finally, making the top 100.
