Philipponnat Clos des Goisses has made its debut on La Place de Bordeaux, with the release of the new 2012 cuvée and a re-release of its rare 1996 vintage.

Philipponnat’s Clos des Goisses has been released through the La Place de Bordeaux, making it the first Champagne producer to distribute its wines through the historic network.
According to The Drinks Business, the aim of the project is “to broaden further the already impressively global distribution of Clos des Goisses (with a distribution in 45 countries already) and to achieve a still finer-grained allocation of their wines”.
The magazine reported that the first release would be small and “only four négociants have been selected for an allocation”.

Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 2012 is now being offered internationally for £1,680 per 12×75, up 34.9% on the 2011’s current Market Price (£1,245).
Only 13,000 bottles were produced from the 2012 vintage, around half that produced in the most generous years, according to Jane Anson.
The wine received 97-points from Vinous’ Antonio Galloni, who called it “a Champagne of extraordinary elegance and finesse”. “Its aging potential will be measured in decades not years,” he added.
Anson awarded the release 94-points. She commented: “Overall a sense that it grows in power and length, and this is a gorgeous Champagne with its distinctive and powerful house style”.
Fair Value
Although it sits above all vintages of the new century, the 2008 boasts the highest critic score (AG 98) and has been the most traded Clos des Goisses vintage on the secondary market. It trades 33.9% higher than the 2012.
The 2004 offers bottle age and boasts 97-points from Galloni and is currently available at £1,760 per case.
Clos des Goisses 1996
Along with the 2012 release, this week saw a small re-release of the rare 1996 vintage at £450 per bottle (equal to £5,400 per 12×75).
The new release was bottled in 1997 and disgorged in March 2021. Between 600-900 bottles have reportedly been released for worldwide distribution.
Jane Anson gave the new release a perfect 100-point score. She said that, “only small amounts of this vintage have been made available before now, so this is really an extremely special release from one of the last Champagne houses to be run by a member of its founding family”.
The 1996 received 97-points from Antonio Galloni (Vinous), when he tasted it from magnum in 2015, making it one of his highest-scoring vintages of Clos des Goisses. He had previously described it as “one of the all-time greats from Philipponnat”.
The wine was most recently reviewed by The Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, who tasted a “perfectly preserved original disgorgement” and gave it 94-points. He liked its, “complex aromas of candied peel, warm biscuits, golden orchard fruit and toast,” and said that this “is one 1996 Champagne that has finally arrived at full maturity”.
The price of the new release represents 50% increase on Clos des Goisses 1996’s current Market Price of £3,600 per 12×75 on Liv-ex.
