Klein Constantia’s Vin de Constance 2018 has been released internationally for £492 per 12x50cl, 5% more than the 2017.
South Africa’s signature sweet wine, which was lauded as one of the world’s great wines in the 18th and 19th centuries, joined La Place de Bordeaux’s distribution network in 2019 in a bid to raise its international profile.
Critical opinion
James Suckling awarded the 2018 Vin de Constance 98-points and described it as “always energetic and vivid”. He added that “it’s a sweet wine to drink when young, to marvel over the intensity and verve, yet also one to age for decades”.
Matthew Jukes gave it 19.5++/20 points and said: “If you have never tasted this wine before, please start with this vintage – it will blow your mind. If you have and you are a fan, this is a critical purchase for your collection”.
Where is the value?
Based on its critical reception, today’s release is likely to attract buyers. The highest-scoring Wine Advocate vintage, the 2007 (97-points), costs double. A score of 95-points or higher from the Wine Advocate would make the new release look well priced.
Both the 2015 and 2016 vintages might present an alternative, with 94-points from The Wine Advocate and available for slighly less than the 2018.
