The wine is being offered by the international trade for £470, up 8.8% on the current Market Price of the 2019.
The wine is just on the Fair Value line though there are a couple of back vintages with equal or better scores available for less.
Critical Opinion
Benchmark Critic, Neal Martin, rated the 2020 Haut-Batailley 92-94 saying it “conveys superb energy” and “will give 25-30 years of drinking pleasure”.
His fellow critic at Vinous, Antonio Galloni, scored it 91-93, calling it “a powerful and brooding Pauillac”. Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW scored the wine 92-94 and James Suckling awarded it 94-95.
Several critics noted the freshness of the wine as well as a “mineral” and “saline” quality to it.
Fair Value
The new release just comes in at ‘Fair Value’ according to the Liv-ex methodology. Having been taken over by the Cazes family a few years ago this is a property that Bordeaux buyers have taken a renewed interest in.
The 2019, with a 93-95 bracket from Martin and costing 8% less, offers value versus the 2020. Likewise, the 2015 with 93-points and at a 39% discount is another physical vintage that buyers might consider.
More generally, the 2014 vintage with 92-points and at £324 a case looks a compelling buy as well.
