The 2020 Château du Tertre has been released for €27 per bottle ex-négociant, up 7.1% on the 2019 release.
The international trade is offering the wine for £328 per 12×75, 3.1% more than the current Market Price of the 2019.
Older vintages that boast a higher Benchmark Critic score include the 2008 and 2016. They are available at a discount compared to today’s release.
Critical reception
James Suckling awarded the 2020 du Tertre a barrel range of 94-95. He described it as “full-bodied, layered and chewy with fine-grained tannins and a punchy finish”.
Jeb Dunnuck gave it 91-93+, saying that it “is fresh and lively, with pretty red and blue fruits as well as lots of sappy herbal and floral nuances”. He explained that “the Margaux appellation was one of the more challenging places in the Médoc in 2020, but this looks to be terrific”.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Advocate) also commented on the “compelling freshness” and “approachable texture” but scored the wine a lower range of 87-89 points.
Neal Martin (Vinous), whose scores were just released, awarded the same range of 87-89. He observed: “The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, but again, I perceive some herbaceousness in this vintage, plus some attenuation toward the gritty finish”.
Meanwhile, Julia Harding (JancisRobinson.com) gave it 17+ and said it was “long, fine-boned”.
Fair Value
The 2020 is priced slightly above recent vintages that command the same Benchmark Critic score, such as 2017 and 2014.
The 2016 offers good value for money, with 91 points from Neal Martin and at a 2.4% discount. The 2008 (NM 89) also looks attractive, being 5.5.% cheaper and with 12 years of bottle age.
