Normally one would not immediately associate Chilean wines with Easter. That was until earlier this year, when a two-hectare vineyard was planted on one of Chile’s Polynesian territories, Rapa Nui, aka Easter Island.

Chile in the Market

Chile is still relatively new to the fine wine secondary market, but activity has been gathering pace. The first ever trade of a Chilean wine was the 1999 Almaviva in October 2005. Since then, trade for Chilean wines have climbed to new heights.

In 2020 value, volumes, and distinct LWINs traded, unique buyers, and number of LIVE offers, all hit all-time highs for country.

The 2017 vintage has proved the most popular over the past year and all major buying regions have been getting involved in the action.

Critical Reception

The wines of Chile really started to be in the spotlight from 2017, when James Suckling named the 100-point 2015 Almaviva his ‘Wine of the Year’.

In 2020, he one-upped himself when he nominated the 100-point 2017 Almaviva as his ‘Wine of the Decade’. Both wines currently have a market price of £1,299 per 12×75.

Collaborations lead trade in 2021

Two major collaborations, Mondavi & Chadwick’s ‘Seña’ and Rothschild & Concho Y Toro’s ‘Almaviva’, currently lead trade by both value and volume in 2021. A growing number of Chilean producers are turning to La Place de Bordeaux, however, as they seek to grow their worldwide distribution and fine wine credentials.
