Spanish “First Growth” Vega Sicilia released the newest vintage of its flagship wine, Unico 2011.
The wine is being offered by the international trade at £2,844 per 12×75, a 5.8% increase on the 2010 release (£2,688).
Luis Gutierrez, who covers the region for the Wine Advocate, awarded the wine 96 points. He included technical notes, explaining “they selected 95% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon […] the bunches and grapes macerated at 9 to 10 degrees Celsius for three to four days.”
According to Gutierrez, this developed “a nose with some notes of ripe black fruit, meat and underbrush, somewhat herbal and perfumed.”
88,288 bottles, 3,505 magnums, 318 double magnums, 60 Imperial and 3 Salmanazar were produced for the 2011 vintage.
The wine comes to the market above a number of recent vintages. The 98-point 2009 vintage appears to present significant value. It is the highest scored by the Wine Advocate and is trading a touch below its UK release. However, more recently, the wine has been on the move – up 12% since the beginning of 2020.
