Eglise Clinet 2019 has been released at €204 per bottle ex-négociant, down 2.9% on the 2018 release price (€210). The wine is being offered at £2,590 per 12×75, down 2.8% on the 2018’s opening price of £2,616 per case.
The 2019 is Denis Durantou’s last vintage – the much-admired winemaker sadly died in May this year.
The wine has not been short of critical appraisal. Neal Martin awarded it 97-99 points, calling it “a fitting testament to the late winemaker”. He continued: “Quintessential l’Eglise-Clinet, it will give half a century of drinking pleasure and the perfect way to remember and raise a toast to one of Pomerol’s finest vignerons”.
According to Antonio Galloni (also, 97-99): “A Pomerol of soaring, majestic intensity L’Eglise-Clinet dazzles from start to finish. Layers of dark fruit, gravel, spice and dried flowers unfold over time”. He said that “Denis Durantou’s 2019s are absolutely brilliant across the board”.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Advocate) even found a candidate for perfection in the 2019 Eglise Clinet, scoring it 98-100 points. She explained that “this is a wine that will stop you in your tracks and demand you to think, contemplate and reflect. And if all that isn’t enough, it is also fantastically delicious”.
Eglise Clinet 2019 also received 99-100 points from James Suckling, for whom, this is “a wine with real soul. One of the greats”.
Prices for Eglise Clinet 2019 show 73% correlation to ‘Benchmark Critic’ scores. As seen in the chart below, today’s release is coming to the market bang on the ‘Fair Value’ line. Based on the critical appraisal and as the last Denis Durantou vintage, the wine is selling out fast.
Buyers unable to secure an allocation might look back at the already physical 2016.
La Petite Eglise 2019 has also released, at €28.2 per bottle ex-négociant, down 6% on the 2018 release (€30).
