Almaviva 2017 has been released at €96 per bottle ex-negociant, up 10% on the 2016 release (€87). It is being offered by the international trade at £1,248 per 12×75, a 12% increase on the 2016 release price (£1,116).
Critical reception for this year’s Almaviva has been mixed. Luis Gutiérrez (Wine Advocate) scored the wine 94+ points. In his tasting note, he said that “2017 was an unusual year, warm and extremely dry”, which meant that the harvest was a few weeks earlier than normal. He added that this also meant that the vines “saw extremely low yields”.
Gutiérrez went on to say that the wine is “a nicely crafted red blend, and they were able to overcome the difficulties of the year; I see the style of something between 2016 and 2015, quite compact. It might require some more bottle age to open up, and it should develop nicely in bottle.”
James Suckling, on the other hand, scored the wine a perfect 100 points. In his tasting note, he said that “it’s structured and powerful. Dense and very, very deep”.
Prices for Almaviva are not closely correlated to critic scores. Instead vintages have appreciated in price with the passing of time, as the chart above shows.
Based on today’s release price of £1,248 per 12×75, the 2017 vintage is coming to the market above a number of other recent vintages. Followers of Gutiérrez may want to consider the higher-scoring 2016, which is available at a 14% discount.
On the other hand, followers of Suckling who are confident in the quality of the wine may find value in today’s release.
