Opus One 2016 has been released at €225 per bottle ex-negociant, up 8% on the 2015 release (€208). The wine is being offered by the trade at £2,940 per 12×75, an increase of 9% in sterling terms on the 2015’s release price of £2,700 per case.
Critical reception for this year’s Opus One has been positive. Antonio Galloni (Vinous) scored the wine 96+ points. In his tasting note he said that “of the last four vintages, the 2016 is certainly the most open-knit in the early going”.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (Wine Advocate) awarded 97+ points and said that it was “a very decadent expression of Opus One with a provocatively effortless harmoniousness that is truly difficult to resist.”
James Suckling, on the other hand, scored the wine a slightly higher 99 points and said, “it shows drive and brightness”.
However, prices for Opus One are not closely correlated to critic scores. Instead vintages have appreciated in price with the passing of time, as the chart below shows.
Today’s release is being offered at about the same price as most recent vintages currently available. Buyers looking for other options may want to consider the 2012 vintage, which boasts an additional four years in bottle, 96 points from Galloni and Robert Parker, and is the cheapest vintage available on the market.
