Haut Bailly 2018 has been released at €84 per bottle ex-negociant, up 16.7% on the 2017’s opening price of €72 and the same as the 2016. It is being offered by the international trade at £1,044 per 12×75, an increase of 17.6% on the 2017 release of £888 per case.
Critical reception of this year’s offering has been positive. Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Advocate) scored it 96-98+ points and described it as “full-bodied, rich and densely laden with layer upon layer of vibrant black fruits and mineral nuances”.
James Suckling awarded the wine 97-98 points and also complimented its “incredible depth of fruit” and “extremely tight and polished tannins”. Antonio Galloni (Vinous) said that “the 2018 Haut-Bailly speaks with real authority and class” and gave it 94-97 points.
Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider), who awarded it 96-98 points, added that the “2018 was produced from some of the lowest yields in the history of the estate at 21 hectoliters per hectare.”
Prices for Haut Bailly show 79% correlation to ‘Benchmark Critic’ scores. While followers of Suckling Perrotti-Brown will find value in today’s release, those considering Galloni’s score might be less convinced.
The similarly scored 2016 looks like an attractive alternative and is currently available at a discount. The 2010, which boasts 98 points from Robert Parker and offers bottle age, can also be bought at only a small premium.
