Canon Gaffeliere 2018 has been released at €62.40 per bottle ex-negociant, a 13% increase on the 2017’s opening price of €55.20. It is being offered by UK merchants for £768 per 12×75, up 18.2% in sterling terms on the 2017 release of £650 per case.
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) was full of praise for this wine. In his tasting note, he said: “Even with all of its intensity, the 2018 retains an element of translucence that is beguiling”. Galloni was the critic from our ‘Benchmark Critic’ series to award today’s release the highest score – a barrel range of 95-98 points.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Wine Advocate) also liked the wine and commented on its “fantastically exuberant nose”. She rated it 94-96 points and described it as “wonderfully decadent”. Meanwhile, James Suckling scored today’s release 94-95 points and said it “shows momentum and depth”.
According to Jancis Robinson, who gave it 16.5+ points, the 2018 Canon Gaffeliere is “really rather pure and 21st century”. For James Molesworth (Wine Spectator, 95-98), it “has the grip of the vintage” and “is piercingly focused in feel”.
Prices for Canon Gaffeliere show 81% correlation to the ‘Benchmark Critic’ scores. Followers of Suckling, Galloni and Perrotti-Brown will find relative value in today’s release.
Other vintages that look attractive, and are currently slightly cheaper, include the physical 2015 and 2016. Those looking for bottle age might wish to consider the 2012.
