Troplong Mondot 2018 has been released at €74.40 per bottle ex-negociant, up 3.3% on the 2017’s opening price of €72. It is being offered by the trade at £918 per 12×75, an increase of 6.3% in sterling terms on the 2017 release of £864 per case.
James Suckling scored the wine 97-98 points and said its focus “sets a new standard for Troplong Mondot with density and minerality that [he has] not encountered for decades”.
Despite awarding the wine a slightly lower barrel range of 94-97 points, Antonio Galloni (Vinous) was also full of praise. Galloni called it “a remarkable wine” and noted that “there is a level of precision and vibrancy in the 2018 that is simply breathtaking”.
Meanwhile, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Advocate) gave it 93-95+ points and commented on the “wonderfully fresh” palate, which offers “energetic black fruit with a downright racy line of freshness (uncommon for this vintage) and firm, rounded tannins”.
Prices for Troplong Mondot are 84% correlated to critic scores. Today’s release will appeal to followers of Suckling as it falls just below the ‘Fair Value’ line. Those considering Perrotti-Brown and Galloni’s scores might wish to look back at previous vintages that offer better value for money.
