Chasse Spleen 2018 has been released at €24 per bottle ex-negociant, up 14.3% on the 2017 (€21) and up 11.1% on the 2016 (€21.6). It is being offered by the international trade at £288 per 12×75, up 10.8% on the 2017 release of £260 per case.
Antonio Galloni (Vinous) is the only critic from our ‘Benchmark Critic’ series to have reviewed the wine at this early stage. Awarding it a barrel range of 89-91 points, Galloni commented that the wine “has a gorgeous sense of immediacy and pure pleasure”.
Jane Anson from Decanter scored it slightly higher (92 points) and said that “Chasse Spleen continues as the modern, vibrant face of Moulis”. Chris Kissack (Wine Doctor), who gave it 91-93 points, described it as “attractive, but lighter, cooler and fresher than some”.
At this price level, today’s release stands above most recent vintages available in the market, including the 2014, 2015 and 2016 which boast higher scores from Neal Martin. The 2016, in particular, which Martin said “might represent one of the best quality-to-price ratios on the Left Bank” is now 13% cheaper. Buyers looking for value have plenty to choose from.
