Pape Clement 2018 released

By May 9, 2019Bordeaux 2018

Pape Clement 2018 has been released at €66 per bottle ex-negociant, up 7.8% on the 2017 (€61.20). It is being offered by the trade for £795 per 12×75, up 4.6% on the 2017 release per case (£760).

James Suckling scored the wine 97-98 points. In his tasting note he said it “is a very driven Pape Clement with fantastic density and finesse at the same time”.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Wine Advocate) also praised the wine. She awarded it 96-98 points and said it had “amazing freshness, finishing very long and mineral laced”.

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) scored the wine a slightly lower 93-96 points. He said that “in most vintages, Pape Clement is much more showy and inviting, but the 2018 is in no mood to show all of its cards. Instead, we find a Pape Clement that explodes with vertical intensity and lift”.

Prices for Pape Clement are 62% correlated to our ‘Benchmark Critic’ series. Today’s release is coming to the market below the line implied by our ‘fair value’ methodology for followers of Perrotti-Brown and Suckling, and just on the line for followers of Galloni. It therefore looks like a fair release.

Other options include the 2016, 2015 and 2012 vintages, which are all well-scored and available at a similar price to today’s release.

Pape Clement Blanc 2018 was also released today €98.40 per bottle ex-negociant, up 1.2% on the 2017 (€97.20). It is being offered by the trade for £1,185 per 12×75, down 1.2% on the 2017 release per case (£1,200).
