The Wine Advocate releases Burgundy 2017 En Primeur report

By January 8, 2019Burgundy, Critic Reviews

Yesterday evening (UK time), the Wine Advocate published the first part of its 2017 Burgundy En Primeur report by William Kelley. In the report, Kelley commented that the 2017 vintage was the first large harvest for the region in a decade and noted the contrast between the red and white wines.

When describing the reds, Kelley commented that the 2017s “are so fruit-driven and charming that they will drink well on release”. He went on to say that they “will offer more immediate pleasure than the more serious, structured 2016 and 2015 vintages, though they are unlikely ever to rival those years for depth, longevity and complexity”.

Indeed, Kelley’s report also contains a number of 2016 reds. Three wines – Leroy Chambertin, Leroy Romanee Saint Vivant and DRC Romanee Conti – were awarded a perfect 100 points.

Kelley suggested that, “for the white wines, 2017 should be taken more seriously”. He said that “these white Burgundies are less tangy and tensile than the 2014s, but they approach and sometimes surpass that vintage in quality”. He added that “there is a succulence and plenitude to the 2017 whites that makes them very appealing indeed, and it is hard to find a recent analogy for the character of the vintage”.

Overall, Kelley’s top-scoring 2017 was Roulot Meursault Perrieres, which he awarded a barrel range of 97-99 points. In his tasting note he described it as “one of the wines of the vintage” and “an immensely good Meursault Perrieres that will demand and reward extended bottle age”.

Kelley’s top-scoring 2017s can be found in the table below. You can read the full report at RobertParker.com, here. The second part of his report will be published on the 31st January.
