Trade by value was flat this week, but it increased by volume. First Growth activity remains relatively strong for this year at 19.6%, despite dipping slightly on last week when it reached a recent high.
Bordeaux’s trade share held steady. Still, the region has not fully recovered from the downward trend it set this summer when it hit all-time lows.
With the festive period approaching, Champagne continued to climb – up to 18.5% this week. It was largely helped by heavy trading of Dom Perignon and Cristal. As we noted in our recent report on the Champagne market, Cristal has seen a boost over the past year.
Rhone’s trade share also increased on last week, while Italy, Burgundy and the Rest of the World pulled back slightly.
The most active wine by value this week was Dom Perignon 2002. It last traded at £1,510 per 12×75. Yquem 1998 also featured in the top five by both value and volume.
Carmes Haut Brion 2014, which was among the most traded wines by volume this week, has doubled its price since release. It last traded at £690 per 12×75, up 119% on its En Primeur release price of £315.
Mouton Rothschild 2001, which was among the top traded wines, has also been on the rise. It traded at a record high of £4,500 per 12×75 this week.
Bordeaux 2016
The trade and critics have been starting to focus on Bordeaux 2016 as the wines are bottled. Attendees at the UGC London tasting last week showed great enthusiasm for the vintage. Critics are beginning to publish their reviews. Jane Anson shared her thoughts on Médoc in Decanter, and Neal Martin wrote about his first impressions of “value” wines from Bordeaux 2016 in Vinous.
Liv-ex Port 50
This week, we launched the Port 50 Index. It tracks the price performance of the last ten vintages of the five most actively traded Port wines: Dow, Fonseca, Graham, Taylor and Warre. You can read more about it here. More analysis will follow in the coming weeks.
